How To Get Out Of Your Own Way: 10 Lessons From Endurance Training

Here are quick hits (lessons) that I have pondered on and thought of as I do my training and long distance running.

As a note: I have sciatic pain so I have to be very careful with my training. I tell you this because I usually end up competing with the weakness in me telling me to stop or find an excuse to quit early. That is why you will find some of these points very blunt and direct.

These short bursts are written to make you think and reflect — and hopefully form a plan of action for your work.

You will never outperform the image you have of yourself in your mind.

-

If you are a leader, what image do you have of your team and how do you help or hinder their self-image to perform?

-

If you think you can’t, you won’t be able to do whatever it is you’re aiming to do.

-

Boring, simple, productive steps over time will help you go the distance.

-

Results are binary: they are either done or they are not.

-

Say: “I either create results or excuses”.

-

Accountability to others who are on the same path as you is one of the most powerful mechanisms to stick to your word.

-

Victory is winning the inner battle. (it is so rewarding)

-

The ability to go through discomfort is a “muscle” you can build (or lose) over time.

-

You don’t have to do things just for its own sake; serve a higher purpose.
